Titanium anodizing for implants and titanium abutments

Titanium Anodizer – For Implantology

The titanium anodizer allows you to easily carry out controlled anodizing of titanium parts: implants, abutments, screws, bases, bars and prosthetic components. Thanks to a simple and precise electrochemical system, it generates a protective oxide layer that improves biocompatibility, wear resistance and enables coloration of implant surfaces.

Brand:Mestra
SKU:MTHO0010
Price incl. VAT:49,95 €
Use:Implantology & implant-borne prosthetics
Voltage:10 to 80 V (titanium anodizing)

In implant dentistry, titanium anodizing helps to enhance corrosion resistance, stabilize the surface and limit ion release into the oral environment. The thickened oxide layer remains biocompatible and preserves the excellent mechanical properties of titanium, while improving the durability of components. Controlled coloration also provides visual coding of implant diameters and platforms, reducing the risk of errors both in the lab and chairside. Under ceramic restorations, this shade management contributes to a more harmonious aesthetic result in the visible zone.

Benefits

  • Increased corrosion and wear resistance of titanium parts.
  • Electrical insulation of the surface for better compatibility with other materials.
  • Reduced metallic ion release into the oral environment.
  • Surface compatible with zirconia and ceramic superstructures.
  • Full biocompatibility thanks to the formed titanium oxide layer.

Operating principle

  • Controlled electrochemical oxidation via a 10 to 80 V voltage range.
  • Creation of a colored oxide layer proportional to the applied voltage.
  • Simple electrolyte bath: demineralized water + sodium bicarbonate.
  • Coloration in 5 seconds depending on the selected voltage.
  • Final thorough rinse in demineralized water after each cycle.

Clinical applications

  • Aesthetic coloration of visible transmucosal abutments.
  • Surface treatment of implants, screws and prosthetic components.
  • Improved bonding of ceramics and zirconia to titanium.
  • Fast, customized and reproducible production in the laboratory.
  • In-house control of the shade and finish of implant components.

Pre-treatment & safety

  • Preliminary cleaning in an alkaline bath to remove grease and residues.
  • Rinse with demineralized water before immersion in the electrolyte bath.
  • Fix the part to the holder connected to the positive terminal.
  • Strict control of current, voltage and temperature.
  • Compliance with the protocol ensures an even and long-term stable oxide layer.

Example of colors obtained according to the voltage applied to the titanium: from yellow to blue, violet and then pink around 80 V, for precise customization of abutments.

Delivery

The titanium anodizer is supplied ready to use at 220 Volts, with all accessories required for surface treatment of implant components. It is designed for dental technicians and implant surgeons who wish to control finishing, color and anti-corrosion protection of their titanium components in-house, either in the laboratory or at the practice.

FAQ – Dental titanium anodizer

How should titanium parts be prepared before anodizing?

Before anodizing, it is essential to carry out thorough degreasing of each titanium component.
Use an appropriate alkaline bath to remove grease, polishing paste and surface contaminants.
Then rinse generously with demineralized water to avoid any unwanted mineral deposits.
Handle the components only with clean tweezers or gloves to limit fingerprints.
A perfectly clean surface ensures the formation of a homogeneous oxide layer.
This results in a regular, reproducible coloration and better long-term stability after anodizing.

Which voltage should I choose to obtain the desired color on titanium?

The final shade depends directly on the voltage applied on the titanium anodizer.
At low voltage, the oxide layer remains thin and produces light colors tending towards yellow.
As the voltage is gradually increased, the color shifts towards blue and then violet.
Around 80 V, a pink shade is obtained, which is often preferred for transmucosal abutments.
Each laboratory can create its own internal shade guide by recording the voltages used.
It is recommended to perform tests on samples before treating definitive components.

Does anodizing alter the mechanical properties of titanium implants?

Anodizing creates a very thin titanium oxide layer on the surface of the part.
This layer does not modify the internal structure of the titanium or its functional geometry.
The mechanical properties, fatigue resistance and fit accuracy therefore remain unchanged.
However, the surface gains corrosion resistance in the oral environment.
The anodic layer acts as a protective barrier against chemical aggression.
It also helps to improve the overall biocompatibility of the titanium implantable component.

Is it possible to re-anodize an already colored part if the shade is not suitable?

It is possible to re-anodize a titanium component when the obtained shade is not satisfactory.
The first step is to remove the existing oxide layer using an appropriate stripping protocol.
The part is then thoroughly rinsed with demineralized water to remove all residues.
You can then repeat the preparation as for a new component before starting a new cycle.
The voltage and exposure time are adjusted to achieve the desired color precisely.
By following these steps, the new oxide layer remains homogeneous, stable and fully functional.
